Additional Details

  • When loaded the hair is parented to the Hair Cap which is parented to the figure. For most operations you need to select Tucked Hair, although for changing hair colors, you can have the figure, the Hair Cap or the Hair itself selected.
  • dForce Hair can sometimes be unpredictable! Some combinations of hair morphs and head shapes distort the undraped hair enough so that there is poke-through, which will affect the way that the hair drapes as the hair gets “stuck” to where the poke-through is happening. I therefore recommend that you set up a small animation as the safest way to drape the hair. I suggest setting 91 frames, set the pose and character that you want at 60 frames and have a default pose and the character’s head dialled to zero at frame zero. The frames after 60 are to allow the hair to settle but feel free to press Escape to stop the simulation if there is no further movement or if you like the way the hair is draping already. If the final head position is very different from the default pose, either extend the period for the transition or look at repositioning the figure initially so that the head stays in roughly the same global position. Of course dynamic effects can be achieved by having the head turn, bend or twist between the initial and final poses.
  • I have included a sample animation scene to show how this can be set up and to act as a template for your own draping animations.
  • Some of the morphs (eg. Those that position the hair in front of the shoulders) are intended to only be used at 0% and 100%. Setting them at other values can cause poke-through (eg. With the shoulders) and so this is not recommended.
  • The Wavy Hair morph is normally intended to be applied before draping, although you will notice that the draping tends to straighten the hair again. It can be applied after the drape, but you then risk getting some poke-through. This can be minimised by carefully choosing the camera angle or fixing it in post-work.
  • It is worth checking for your character if there is any poke-through at the front of the head, even if this is not noticeable on the visible part of the Hair Cap. I have included a preset under Utilities to show the whole Hair Cap for this purpose (and one to put it back to normal). There are two morphs in the Hair Cap to remove any poke-through, one which expands all of the cap, and one which only adjusts the front.
  • Invisible Ear Guards are used to ensure that the hair drapes around the ears and in normal usage you should not need to worry about them. You can of course remove them to allow the hair to drape in front of the ears for extra versatility. A couple of presets are included to make them visible and invisible again should you need to check anything.
  • Presets are included to change the way that the hair previews. You can show just the hair guides, show the generated hairs without them showing in the Iray preview (this is the default) or to show them in the Iray preview. This last option involves generating a very high number of polygons and so will slow the responsiveness of the interface and so is most useful to check how the colors will render or other post-drape options, but any changes to pose, camera position etc are best done in the default mode.
  • There is a pause after you press render while all the hair geometry is loaded onto your graphics card. Once loaded the render times are reasonable for such a complex amount of geometry with millions of polygons.
